How New Jersey works out this bill

New Jersey charges 6.625% sales tax on a vehicle, one rate for the whole state, plus a title fee and a registration fee that depends on the vehicle's weight and model year.

The sales tax rate is 6.625% everywhere in the state. A trade-in shown on the dealer's invoice is taken off the price before the tax is figured.

Registration is charged by weight class, and the fee is higher for a vehicle from a recent model year. A new passenger vehicle pays for four years at once.

New vehicles that cost a lot or use a lot of fuel carry an extra surcharge that the dealer collects. Zero emission vehicles pay a yearly fee that rises over time.

Common questions

Does a trade-in lower the sales tax in New Jersey?

Yes. When the dealer's invoice shows a trade-in, its price is subtracted from the price of the vehicle before sales tax.
