What changed

1 change to Nebraska's numbers or rules

  1. Oct 24, 2026Added state with the 5.5% sales tax, an entered local rate, title, registration, plate and other registration fees and the electric vehicle fee. The yearly motor vehicle tax and fee, city wheel taxes and the plug-in hybrid fee are not included.

How Nebraska works out this bill

Nebraska charges 5.5% state sales tax on a vehicle, and cities or counties may add their own tax. Registration fees are small, but a yearly motor vehicle tax based on the original price is billed at registration.

The state rate is 5.5%. The tax is figured on the price minus any trade-in allowance and any rebates that lower the selling price.

Local sales tax can be added on top. Your county treasurer can tell you the rate for your location.

If you paid a lower sales tax in the state where you bought, Nebraska collects the difference when you register.

The state also bills a motor vehicle tax each year. It is based on the vehicle's original price and drops as the vehicle ages, so it is not part of this total.
