How Indiana works out this bill

Indiana charges 7% sales tax on a vehicle, with no local sales tax, plus a title fee and registration fees. A yearly excise tax based on the vehicle's value is billed at registration.

The sales tax rate is 7%. A trade-in comes off the price when the vehicle you trade in is titled in your name.

If you buy in another state and register here, you owe use tax on the difference between the other state's rate and the Indiana rate.

Registration is paid each year. The state also charges a yearly excise tax, and some counties add a wheel tax, which are not part of this total.

Common questions

Does a trade-in lower the sales tax in Indiana?

Yes, for a like-kind exchange where the vehicle you trade in is owned and titled in your name. Negative equity does not count.

Why is the excise tax not in the total?

The yearly excise tax depends on the vehicle's value and age, and some counties add a wheel tax, so it is shown as not included.

Do electric vehicles pay an extra fee?

Yes. Electric vehicles pay a supplemental fee on top of registration, and hybrids pay a separate smaller one.
