How Alaska works out this bill

Alaska has no state sales tax. A city or borough may charge its own, and each decides whether it applies to vehicles. You pay a title fee and a two-year registration fee, plus a motor vehicle registration tax that depends on where you live.

The state does not levy a sales tax. Local governments have broad authority over what they tax.

Registration lasts two years, and the fee is charged for the full period.

A motor vehicle registration tax is charged on top of the fee, based on location and the model year.
